Overview

The City Attorney's Office serves as legal counsel to:

The Office of the City Attorney functions as a small, in-house law firm for the City and School Board. The office handles a diverse practice that includes litigation, contracts, real estate, land use, environmental, taxation, collections, labor relations, administrative, and constitutional law.

Duties

The City Attorney's Office drafts, and/or reviews the preparation of all ordinances and resolutions adopted by City Council, as well as contracts, agreements, leases, franchises, deeds of all types, and other legal documents to which the City or School Board is a party. Services also include handling real estate matters; rendering informal and formal legal opinions; recommending appropriate legal changes in the City Code, City regulations, and policies for both the City and School Board; as well as advising the City and/or School Board of any changes in the law which may affect them.

Term of Appointment

The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council for an indefinite term. The City Attorney's Office consists of the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney, Legal Assistant, and Legal Secretary.
