City Council will meet in business, work sessions

Council Chambers

City Council will meet Thursday, Nov. 8, in a business session and two work sessions. All three sessions are open to the public.

City Council, which regularly meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, moved its meeting to Thursday to avoid conflicting with Election Day, during which Virginia voters this year  will select representatives to the U.S. House from all 11 districts, as well as one U.S. Senate seat, dozens of local races and two ballot questions.

Council's meeting will begin with a special work session at 5:30 p.m. to hear a presentation on a master plan for redevelopment of the White Mill.

The regular business session will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a second work session.

The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work sessions will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

During the business session, City Council is scheduled to vote on re-appointments to three seats to the Industrial Development Authority, one appointment to the Transportation Advisory Board and one appointment to Danville Utility Commission.

During the second work session, City Council will discuss the following matters:

  • employee and retiree benefit changes for 2019.
  • a lease agreement with Norfolk Southern for use of its property on West Main Street near Edgewood Drive. Danville Transit uses the site for a passenger boarding area.
  • a deed of easement requested for access across a parcel located between the Southwyck Farms and Grove Park subdivisions. The easement would allow for access to adjacent property.
  • storm drainage on private property. The unusually wet spring and summer has focused more attention on failing storm water systems on private property and in the public rights-of-way. This situation has resulted in more requests for assistance from the property owners.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

River City TV does not air work sessions, but they are open to the public.
