The Danville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 235 Plantation Road this afternoon at 1:22 pm. Crews arrived at 1:29 pm and found a medium sized one story house with fire and smoke showing from the rear of the house. Engine 6’s crew (from Westover Drive Fire Station) pulled a hand line and began a defensive attack on the structure to extinguish of the fire. Engine 2’s crew (from Piney Forest Road Fire Station) started a water supply and then pulled an additional hand line for extinguishment. A water shuttle operation was set up as there were no hydrants in the area. Once adequate personnel were on scene, an interior fire attack was initiated. Ventilation was established to remove smoke and utilities to the house were controlled.
The fire was knocked down and determined to be under control at 2:02 pm. The house sustained major fire and water damage. One child was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and transported to SOVAH Hospital Emergency Room by the Danville Life Saving Crew.
The Danville Fire Department responded with four engines, a ladder truck, a water tender, a command unit, a safety officer, a rehab unit and a Fire Marshal. Twenty one fire personnel were on the scene for 3 hours and 45 minutes. The Danville Life Saving Crew, Danville Electric Department, Danville Water and Gas Department and Danville Police Department assisted on scene.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Fire Marshal’s office and determined to be a child playing with fire.
The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
