[ARCHIVED] City names Ken Larking as deputy city manager

Ken Larking

The city of Danville announced today that Ken Larking, assistant county manager in Moore County, N.C., has been selected as deputy city manager.

Larking’s first day on the job will be March 18.

“Ken is going to be a great addition to our staff,” City Manager Joe King said. “He not only has years of experience as a manager, but a passion for local government, a strong work ethic and a firm belief in the future of this city as a great place to live and raise a family.”

Larking was selected through a national recruitment. He will bring nearly 15 years of experience with him to Danville. He has served as assistant county manager in Moore County, N.C., for three years. Prior to that, he guided Yadkinville, N.C., as town manager for seven years and served four years as budget and performance manager in Hickory, N.C.

“I appreciate Joe for his confidence in my abilities to be part of the city’s team,” Larking said Tuesday. “I had the good fortune to meet the department directors when I interviewed, and I believe we have a good team in place. I am looking forward to getting to know all of my co-workers and working with them.”

Larking said he is impressed by the steps taken by City Council to “build a strong foundation for years to come.” “I know there is a lot of work left to do, and I look forward to working with City Council to continue the progress,” he said.

“I am definitely impressed by what Danville has done with regard to economic development. I think many communities would be envious of Danville’s success in recruiting a diverse mix of industries. It is important that we continue that effort.”

Larking holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in public administration from Appalachian State University.

He is married to Michelle, a native of Winston Salem, N.C. They have two children: son, Alex, who is 11 years old; and daughter, Emily, who is 9. Larking said his family would finish the school year in Moore County and then relocate to Danville.

“The city has a lot of offer,” Larking said. “There are great recreational opportunities. The River District is exciting, not only to work on from a professional standpoint, but for my family. We are looking forward to being part of the community and taking advantage of the amenities in place.”

Larking takes the position held by David Parrish, who resigned in December to join the city of Greensboro, N.C., as assistant city manager.
