No need to go out of town to celebrate the Fourth of July, there are plenty of Independence Day activities in Danville, ranging from ball games to fireworks to pie eating contests.
The festivities will kick off at noon on July 3 at Ballou Recreation Center with a performance by Nashville recording artist Eric Holmgren. Tickets cost $10 per person, go on sale July 3 and can be purchased by calling 799-5216. Lunch will be included in the show.
Holmgren sings the classics originally performed by George Jones, Conway Twitty and Don Williams.
The Danville Braves will get into the act at 7 p.m. with a home game and annual fireworks display. For more information, call 797-3792.
The Centra Medical Group Patriot Challenge 5K, 10K and Children’s Fun Run will kick off at 8 a.m. on July 4 at Anglers Park. The children’s fun run is $5, while the other two races are $25 ($5 more the day of). Participants can enjoy an ice cream social after the race. The July Fourth Farmer’s Market will open at 3 p.m. Visit the Danville Community Market on Craghead Street for fresh produce, baked goods, arts and crafts, live music and the Second Annual All America Pie Baking Contest presented by Piedmont Shopper and Danville Appliance. Call 797-8961 to enter a pie or for more information. Prizes include a stainless steel glass top stove, a Kitchenaid standalone mixer and a $100 gift certificate to Golden Leaf Bistro.
Finally, join your neighbors at 6 p.m. at the Carrington Pavilion for a concert, children’s rides, arts and crafts and, of course, the annual fireworks display. This event is free and sponsored by URW Community Federal Credit Union, J and J Equipment Rentals and Danville Parks and Recreation.
