[ARCHIVED] Parks and Recreation looking for participants in the Global Cardboard Challenge

Calling all schools, community groups, civic organizations, athletic clubs, booster clubs and creative individuals; this is your chance to win $1,000s for your favorite non-profit. All you need is an imagination and some cardboard.

On October 5, Danville Parks and Recreation will host Danville's Cardboard Challenge during the annual Imagination Children's Festival at the Carrington Pavilion. The challenge is opened to any interested person or groups. Cardboard will be provided for those building the day of the event.

Here’s how it works: All registered participants/groups will build a project out of cardboard, tape and plastic. Projects can be decorated with markers, paint, glitter, pens, etc. No screw nails or wood will be allowed unless the project includes a functioning mechanical/electronic component. Projects can be built at the Carrington the day of or off-site and moved in. The Pavilion will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for unloading. (It is recommended that teams pre-build projects and unload the morning of the challenge).

Judging will take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Categories include Best in Show, Most Creative, Most Functional, Best Sign, Tallest, Largest Team, Most Artistic, Best River Theme, Most Colorful, Best Elementary School Project, Best High School Project and Best Day-of Project.

All local charities serving the needs of Danville/Pittsylvania County are eligible, provided they are a recognized 501(c)3 and they have registered with the event by submitting a nonprofit application to event organizers. All eligible nonprofits will be listed on the event’s page at www.PlayDanvilleVA.com prior to the event.

Inspired by the story of Caine Monroy, a 9-year-old who spent his summer building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store, the Imagination Foundation created the Global Cardboard Challenge to celebrate child creativity and to recognize the role communities can play in fostering said creativity.
