[ARCHIVED] Morning house fire in Danville, Va.

The Danville Fire Department was dispatched to 203 Arnett Blvd. for a reported house fire at 8:17 am this morning. When fire units arrived on the scene a large amount of smoke was coming from all sides of the one story house. The owner was the only occupant and he was already outside on the walkway. He was assisted by Kenneth Gillie and another unknown person. Gillie is a city employee who was passing by and knocked on the door until he awakened the home owner and helped him to exit the house. Mr. Gillie is to be commended for his actions which probably saved the man's life. The fire had started in the basement and was contained there but smoke and heat damage was noted throughout the structure. The Fire Marshal's Office investigated the blaze and determined that it was ignited by a candle left burning there by accident. The Fire Department was on the scene for over two hours with 3 engines, one ladder truck, and two Command Officers. A Safety Officer was also assigned to the incident. The Police Dept. and Danville Life Saving Crew also responded to assist in the operation along with city utilities.

The home owner chose not to be transported to the Emergency Room. And no other injuries occurred during the operation.
