[ARCHIVED] Community a big winner with Danville’s Cardboard Challenge

More than 250 people participated in Danville’s Cardboard Challenge on Saturday and $10,000 was awarded to local non-profits, making the first-year event a huge success.

“This event greatly exceeded our expectations,” said Danville Parks and Recreation Special Events Coordinator Lynette Anderson. “We’d like to thank all the local businesses that donated cardboard and tape. We also want to say thanks to Danville Regional Foundation, to all the teachers and mentors who shared Caine’s Arcade with their students and to all the participants who put on their creative caps and made this event a huge success.”

During the event, teams entered projects constructed solely out of cardboard. The projects were put on display throughout the Imagine Children’s Festival and the community voted on their favorite displays. A panel of judges also voted. Each team competed on behalf of a local non-profit.

The Cardboard Challenge was inspired by the story of Caine Monroy, a 9-year-old who spent his summer building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store, the Imagination Foundation created the Global Cardboard Challenge to celebrate child creativity and to recognize the role communities can play in fostering said creativity. The video can be viewed at www.CainesArcade.com.
