Danville City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to create the Danville United Community Relations Coalition. Council also unanimously approved a separate resolution that established the coalition’s initial bylaws.
The coalition now will hold a kickoff meeting on Nov. 14 at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and include a keynote presentation, member announcements and public comments.
Additional information on the kickoff will be made available as details are finalized.
The purpose of Danville United is to engage the community in making Danville a more tolerant, friendly, and welcoming community to all regardless of race, gender, religion, creed, ethnicity, nationality, or economic status. The coalition provides a means for networking, information sharing and strategy development.
The initial bylaws reflect the consensus of those attending the community meetings held in the last three months regarding the purpose, structure and operation of Danville United.
Unlike its other boards and commissions, City Council will not exercise membership appointment authority for Danville United. Membership is open to all individuals and organizations.
Danville United will have no regulatory authority and will not hear or adjudicate complaints of discrimination. It may provide advice to City Council, but will neither oversee municipal operations, nor attempt to direct activities of member organizations.
