The Danville Fire Department was dispatched to a residential fire alarm just after noon today. When the first Officer arriving found that the resident had set off the insecticides and that they had exploded, he ordered a full structure fire response. After further investigation it was found that there was no fire and that the concussion had blown off cabinet doors and many household item were blown out of place around the kitchen. The occupant was checked by FireFighter/EMT's at the scene and did not require transport to the ER.
After checking the entire structure and ventilating it Firefighters used meters in the home and found high levels of Carbon Monoxide. The home was thoroughly ventilated and the gas was turned off the the structure until the Gas Department can inspect the system and confirm there is no damage to it before turning it back on. Fire crew's gear was decontaminated at the scene with soap and water, per HAZMAT protocol, before being returned to service.
Fire crews were on scene with 16 personnel for about an hour making sure the home was safe and that the occupants were safe.
This occupant was very lucky not to have suffered severe injury. The Fire Department urges everyone to use caution with these over the counter products which can be safe if used in the way they were intended. Read all the instructions for use and make sure all ignition sources are secured before using any aerosol or otherwise flammable product in a confined space. Also do not over saturate any one area with the product. The best and safest practice is to leave it to the professionals.
