[ARCHIVED] Danville begins prepping main thoroughfares for winter storm

Danville city seal

A winter weather advisory is in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday as the latest forecast from the National Weather Service indicates Danville can expect a periods of snow or a wintry mix that will cause travel difficulties.

At 10:57 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a forecast that called for a mix of rain and snowfall beginning early this afternoon and then changing over to all snow by the evening commute.

Less than an inch of snow accumulation is expected in the Danville area.

The Danville Public Works Department today began prepping main thoroughfares in the city for the pending winter storm. Crews spread brine, which is a mixture of water and salt, on roadways. The water in the brine evaporates, leaving the salt behind on the road. The salt breaks the bond between the snow and the roadway, and it therefore helps prevent the snow from freezing onto roads and bridges.

Crews are prepared for a full work shift tonight.

Residents are reminded that snow removal is accomplished on a priority basis. The top priority is main thoroughfares and collector streets leading to various emergency facilities. Second priorities are routes that connect to primary routes and bus routes.

Danville Parks and Recreation will be canceling this evening’s programs due to inclement weather. This includes any basketball practices and games. Afterschool Snow-Day Care will remain open on its regular schedule.

If schools are closed on Wednesday, Afterschool Snow-Day Care will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Coates Recreation on Westover Drive. To reserve a spot, contact Shanette Jenkins at 799-5150. The cost is $15 for those not enrolled in afterschool care.
