ORIGINAL STORY:

The Danville Public Works Department is prepping main thoroughfares, industrial parks and emergency areas such as Danville Regional Medical Center. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service indicates Danville can expect snowfall with an accumulation of one to three inches.

Although light snow and flurries already are developing, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect from noon today through 9 a.m. Wednesday. This winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.

The forecast calls for a daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch. An overnight accumulation of an additional one to two inches is possible, ending early in the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The high today will reach 24 degrees.

Public Works crews spread brine, which is a mixture of water and salt, on roadways. The water in the brine evaporates, leaving the salt behind on the road. The salt breaks the bond between the snow and the roadway, and it therefore helps prevent the snow from freezing onto roads and bridges.

Crews are prepared for a full work shift tonight. If the city receives the accumulation of snow as forecasts indicate, residents are reminded that snow removal is accomplished on a priority basis. The top priority is main thoroughfares and collector streets leading to various emergency facilities. Second priorities are roadways that connect to primary routes and bus routes.
