Danville Utilities is one of 184 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities to earn the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3®) designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service.

In addition to the RP3 designation, Danville Utilities is one of 115 public power systems to earn the APPA’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2013.

Both awards were presented on Monday during the association’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference held in Oklahoma City, Okla.

“RP3 utilities are providing a high level of service to communities all over the country,” said Brent McKinney, manager, electric transmission and distribution at City Utilities of Springfield, Mo., and chair of APPA’s RP3 Review Panel. “These designees stand out as models of safe, reliable and forward-thinking operations.”

The RP3 designation recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement. Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

Danville will retain the RP3 designation for three years.

For the Safety Award of Excellence, entrants are placed in categories according to their number of worker hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records during 2013. Danville received a first-place ranking in its category.

APPA is the national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community- and state-owned electric utilities. It is located in Washington, D.C.
