The Danville Fire Department responded to a major propane leak at 200 River St. We responded with three engines a ladder truck and a command unit. Upon arrival units encountered a large vapor cloud of propane. River St was blocked as well as the walking trail from the intersection of Main and River to the intersection of River St and Halifax Rd for a little more than 2 hours by fire and police personnel for protection of citizens. Fire crews set up the ladder truck and placed handlines into operation to suppress the vapors. Once those streams were in place and operating crews made entry under the protection of water streams and were able to stop the flow of gas by shuting of emergency shut off valves. Crews remained on scene for approximately another hour discipating residual gas that was left. Plant officials with Abercrombie Oil companies Propane gas division arrved on scene and finished securing the facility and deemed that the situation was secure.The cause of the leak is being investigated by the Danville Fire Department Fire Marshals office and the Danville Polce Department.
