On August 2, 2014 the Danville Fire Department responded to 159 Greenwich Ave. for a possible structure fire. A neighbor placed the call into the 911 center reporting hearing the smoke alarms sounding in the residence next door and a smell of smoke. The fire department arrived and found the house full of smoke. Firefighters were able to alert the occupant whom was still asleep in the house and also investigate the source of the smoke. Unattended cooking was found to be the source and firefighters were able to quickly control the situation.
The combination of the neighbor who took action and the smoke alarms installed by the fire department saved the occupant in this incident. The Danville Fire Department began its smoke alarm program in October of 1999 providing smoke alarms and installing them for residents who can not afford them. This program has been credited with saving 27 homes and 73 people since it began.
