[ARCHIVED] City issues disclaimer regarding water sampling, filtration offers

Water treatment plant

The City of Danville wants its water customers to know that the city is not collecting household water samples or installing household water filters because of recent taste and odor issues in the tap water. In addition, the city is not affiliated with any private company offering those services.

Over the past week, Danville Utilities water customers may have received telephone solicitation calls that involve an offer to collect water samples from their taps and to install water filters.

City officials have been contacted by water customers who are concerned or confused about the solicitations.

City water treatment plant staff will return customer telephone calls regarding water issues, but it does not initiate contact with customers and seek to collect water samples. The city does not install household water filters.

Although customers may continue to notice an odd taste and odor in their tap water, the water in the system has been through all of the treatment processes, and all tests for regulated contaminants show the water is safe to drink.

The city continues to work with state agencies to resolve the issue. Those agencies include the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Drinking Water, which regulates public water supplies; the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality; and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
