Burleigh Construction Co. is scheduled on Wednesday to begin making permanent repairs to the bridge at the interchange of Riverside Drive and Piedmont Drive. Motorists traveling Piedmont Drive and westbound on Riverside Drive can expect lane restrictions over the next three weeks.
The repairs include replacement of the bridge rail and patching the concrete surface.
The work crew will set up its equipment beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday, closing the outside lane of westbound Riverside Drive from Park Avenue to the bridge. Construction will begin on Thursday.
The exit and entrance ramps at the bridge will remain open during both setup and construction.
Travel on Piedmont Drive will not be restricted as the crew sets up, but during construction, alternating lanes of northbound and southbound Piedmont Drive will be closed as a safety precaution.
Construction is scheduled each weekday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. All Piedmont Drive lanes will remain open during nights and weekends.
Barriers and traffic signs will be in place. The city advises motorists to slow down and proceed with caution or use alternate routes.
The bridge railing sustained heavy damage on Feb. 13 when a vehicle struck the railing, sending concrete debris onto Piedmont Drive. A Public Works crew removed the 50-foot section damaged and placed temporary concrete barriers along the bridge rail for vehicular safety.
Burleigh Construction is a general contractor based in Concord. The company submitted the winning project bid of $106,719.
