[ARCHIVED] City closes bridge lane for pedestrian trail project

The City of Danville today closed the right northbound lane of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge to allow the contractor to begin converting the lane into a pedestrian trail.

Use of the bridge lane as a pedestrian trail will permit Riverwalk Trail users to go back and forth from the Main Street Plaza and trailhead on the south bank of the Dan River to the trail on the river’s north bank.

The project, which will take about six months to complete, is part of the city’s River District Development Project, which is in its fifth year and has generated more than $100 million in private investment, outpacing public seeding by three-fold.

Burleigh Construction Co. is the contractor. Construction activity will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Motorists are urged to use caution when approaching this area or consider an alternate route.
