[ARCHIVED] Library will celebrate card signup month

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month, and the staff at Ruby B. Archie Public Library are encouraging the community to take advantage of the free benefit.

“The benefits of having a library card are endless,” said Russell Carter, Library Director. “Not only does that little piece of plastic grant you access to all our books, audiobooks, and DVDs here at the library, it can be your passport to local museums, a free subscription to streaming services, an access key to learning a new language, and so much more. The best part about it all, cards are free, and we love having everyone join our library family.”

“You do not need a lot to get a card,” Carter added. “If you live within 50 miles of the Ruby B. Archie Library on Patton Street, no matter the state or county, and do not already have a library account, you can get a card.”

To sign up for a full access card, interested persons can visit the library or the Bookin’ It Mobile Library Service van. A current state or federally issued ID or passport is required. For those who have an ID that does not show a current address, a postmarked piece of mail, car registration, lease agreement, or change address form is accepted along with the ID.

There are no age restrictions to possess a card. Youth under the age of 18 without an ID can sign up for a card with a parent or guardian who meets the requirements.

This year, library staff are introducing a Digital Access Card which can be signed up for online at www.readdanvilleva.org. A digital access card will provide the holder access to all streaming services and databases including the Hoopla and Libby Apps.

In addition, staff are hosting drive-thru library card signups every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the month of September. Staff will also be hosting a signup at 2Witches Winery & Brewing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on September 2 and at the JTI Fountain on Main Street from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on September 23.

The Ruby B. Archie Public Library is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Bookin’ It Mobile Library Services van can be found from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at Coates Recreation Center on Westover Drive, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hope Church on Franklin Turnpike, and on Fridays at Glenwood Community Center on Halifax Road.

For more information about library services, programming, or cards, call 434-799-5195 or visit www.readdanvilleva.org. Follow the library on Facebook and Instagram.
