[ARCHIVED] State agency offering aviation school programs

News release by the Virginia Department of Aviation

Richmond —The Virginia Department of Aviation is pleased to share information about programs offered to students and teachers for the 2021/22 school year. The ICON A-5 Introduction to Flight Program brings a light sport amphibian aircraft on a trailer to schools, career days, and other community events at no cost to the educational group. Students will learn how aircraft fly and about aviation careers. They will be able to sit in the cockpit and learn about flight controls and the instrument panel. Some events may also include the opportunity to fly an aircraft simulator. The ICON A-5 has participated in programs for students from K-12 as well as university students and adult organizations.

The 2021/22 Aviation Teachers Grant program offers a $500.00 grant to teachers who develop a lesson plan utilizing aviation concepts. The deadline for applications is February 28, 2022.

The Virginia level of the International Aviation Art Contest is open to students ages 6-17 and this year’s theme is “Design Your Perfect Aircraft.” Artwork must be mailed to the Department of Aviation by January 10, 2022.

There are three scholarships available to Virginia high school seniors including the 2021/22 John R. Lillard Scholarship, 2021/22 Kenneth R. Scott Aviation Scholarship and the 2021/22 Willard G. Plentl, Sr. Aviation Scholarship. The scholarships range from $2,500 to $3,000 and applications must be received by March 11, 2022.

The Chad Weaver Aviation Scholarship provides up to $800 for ground school and flight training for teenagers and adults to pursue a private pilot license or flight instructor certificate.

The Virginia Department of Aviation's Mission is to: Develop an advanced aviation system that is safe, secure, and fosters economic development; Build an appreciation by the public for the importance of aviation and to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals; and Provide safe and highly efficient flight services for the Commonwealth's leadership and state agencies.
