The Danville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 157 Smith St. at 3:06 pm. Engine 3 (Industrial Ave.) arrived and reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of the single family home. All occupants were reported outside of the home. E3 was assisted by Engine 1 and Ladder 1 (Lynn St.), Engine 7 (Airport Dr.), Battalion Chief 1 and Haz-Mat 2 (Lynn St.) with 16 personnel on scene. The home sustained heavy damage in the rear kitchen area with the rest of the home receivng damage from heat and smoke. The DFD was assisted on scene by the Danville Police Dept., Danville Utilities, and Danville Life Saving Crew. DFD Fire Marshal's Office responded and investigated the fire. The cause was determined to be careless handling of cooking materials. No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was contacted and will be assisting the family.
