[ARCHIVED] Senior housing named after civil rights legend

News release by the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority

In the October Board 2022 meeting, DRHA Board Commissioner Alonzo Jones proposed the naming of the new apartments for seniors after Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell Sr., which met with unanimous agreement. Commissioner Jones relayed to the board that having a place for seniors to live near the Bibleway Cathedral had been a part of Apostle Campbell’s vision that he had not yet been able to realize.

On Sunday, December 4th, members of the Danville City Council, Danville Public School Board and Superintendent, and members of the Board of Commissioners, along with the CEO and Executive Director, Larissa Deedrich, and CFO, Katya Urraco for the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (DRHA); were gathered at Bibleway Cathedral as part of the celebrations during the 70th pastoral anniversary of Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell Sr. It was during this milestone occasion, and a full-circle moment, DRHA presented a plaque signifying that the new senior apartments going up in the Seeland Crossing area in Spring 2023, will be named the Lawrence G. Campbell Sr. Apartment Complex.

CEO and Executive Larissa Deedrich says she is “excited to present this honor to Apostle Campbell because he has been such an inspirational pillar of this community and an advocate for equality.” It is especially significant as housing continues to be an issue among most marginalized groups in terms of affordability and racial equity.

DRHA announced the building of affordable apartments for seniors and disabled citizens in July of this year. DRHA was awarded $11.5 million in Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and has partnered with Landmark Asset Service, Inc. to develop the project.

The new Lawrence G. Campbell Sr. Apartment Complex will be a 52-unit housing project featuring 34 one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom apartments. The apartments will be packed with amenities specifically designed for seniors, including floorplans for one-level living, a fully accessible elevator, a community room with a kitchenette for resident gatherings, an exercise room, a computer center with high-speed internet, and in-unit washer/dryer hookups.
