City Council’s inaugural meeting set for Jan. 3

City Council will hold its inaugural meeting at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 3. The organizational meeting is held every two years for the public swearing-in of winners of the most recent City Council election, selection of a mayor and vice mayor, and issuance of seat assignments for each Council meeting.

The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building.

James Buckner, Bryant Hood, Alonzo Jones, and Dr. Gary Miller. won re-election in November. Following their public searing-in, the City Council selects the mayor and vice mayor from among its members to serve a two-year term. Jones is currently serving as mayor, a position he has held since July 1, 2018. Miller is the vice mayor, and he has served in that position for the past two years.

Following the selection of mayor and vice mayor, seating positions for every council member except the mayor will be determined by a random drawing. Council members must maintain the positions assigned for each meeting until the next inaugural meeting in two years.

Council members serve four-year, staggered terms. The other members of the Council are L.G. (Larry) Campbell, Barry Mayo, Sherman Saunders, Lee Vogler and Madison Whittle.

The inaugural meeting is being held on the first business day in January because elections for the City Council were moved to November. Previously, elections for the City Council were held in May, with the inaugural meeting the first business day in July.

Later in the day, the City Council will meet in business and work sessions. The business session will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work session will begin at the conclusion of the business session. It will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and RiverStreet Networks channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

Details on the agendas are available online.
