[ARCHIVED] City plans Citizen Academy to offer unique look at government

The city of Danville invites area residents to participate in its first-ever Citizen Academy. The program will provide an overview of city departments, operations, services and resources.

In addition to serving as a learning forum about city government, the academy is designed to improve communications between citizens and government, as well as foster citizen involvement.

“The citizens of Danville are our most valuable resource, especially as Danville moves into a new era full of potential and promise,” Deputy City Manager David Parrish said. “The Citizen Academy will provide an in-depth look at how local government functions and serves the needs of residents.

“It also will help residents understand how they can make a difference by becoming more informed and involved in the community.”

Classes will include an overview of Police, Fire, Public Works, Utilities, Community Development, Economic Development, Finance, Administration, Parks & Recreation, and Transportation. Citizens will learn about the resources and programs of each department and the men and women behind them.

The Citizen Academy will meet on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 6 and continuing until Nov. 15. Classes will be a combination of lecture and interactive sessions. Each session will be led by a facilitator and feature presentations by city employees.

Optional tours will be offered on selected Saturdays. A graduation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, during a meeting of City Council.

Participation is open to individuals who are 18 years of age and older. Space is limited to 25 participants. Danville residents will be given priority for seats. There is a cost of $25. Selected participants are expected to commit for the duration of the program.

Application forms can be downloaded from the city’s website – – or obtained during normal business hours at the city manager’s office, which is located on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building on Patton Street.

Applications are due July 31.
