[ARCHIVED] City names new director of utilities

The city of Danville today announced that Steve G. Saum of Richmond, Ind., has been named utilities director. In that capacity, Saum will oversee the electric, natural gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications services of Danville Utilities.

Saum’s first day on the job will be Monday, Oct. 1.

Saum was selected through a national recruitment. He brings more than 32 years of utilities experience with him to Danville. For the past five years, Saum was general manager/CEO of Richmond Power & Light (RP&L) serving 22,000 customer accounts. Prior to promotion to that position, he was RP&L’s engineering and operations manager for four years. He entered municipal electric service after a 21-year career with American Electric Power and two years with a consulting firm.

Saum holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Ohio Northern University and a master’s degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan University. He has been active in community affairs.

”We’re fortunate to have attracted a new utilities director with such experience, training and capabilities,” City Manager Joe King said. “Steve will do a great job for Danville Utilities.”

Danville Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications services in Danville and distributes electricity to approximately 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square-mile service territory covering Danville, the southern third of Pittsylvania County, and small portions of Henry and Halifax counties.
