[ARCHIVED] City mails notice to property owners with overdue real estate taxes

Property owners in Danville who have not paid their real estate tax bill in full will receive a delinquent notice this week from the city of Danville as part of an expanded effort by the city to collect unpaid taxes.

The notice gives property owners 30 days to make full payment. Accounts remaining unpaid after 30 days will be submitted to an external collection agency.

“Delinquent accounts submitted to the collection agency will incur significant additional costs and fees,” said Barbara Dameron, the city’s director of finance. “Customers are urged to take advantage of this time period to resolve their delinquent tax obligations and to avoid these costs.”

On Monday, 4,518 delinquent notices were mailed. These notices represented approximately $2.8 million of delinquent real estate taxes.

Property owners can pay their overdue bills online, by phone, mail or in person. To pay online, go to www.-danville-va.gov. To pay by phone, call (888) 918-1140. Bills paid by mail should be sent to City of Danville Central Collections, P.O. Box 3308, Danville, VA 24543. To pay in person, go to Central Collections office, which is located in the Charles H. Harris Financial Service Center at 311 Memorial Drive.

Payment at the Central Collections office can be made by cash, money order or cashier’s check. Credit cards and debit cards can be used to make payment online or by phone, but they cannot be used to make payment at the Central Collections office.

When making payment online, an added processing fee is charged because this service is provided by a third-party vendor. This fee goes to the vendor, and not the city, for processing the payment.

Property owners who believe they have received a delinquent notice in error are asked to contact Central Collections at (434) 799-5125.
